MOVIE |
Once Hollywood finds a genre that's
popular, they really milk it for all it's worth. Twister was one of
the first big disaster movies released in the mid nineties and after
it's huge success everyone followed.
Directed by Jan de Bont fresh from
his success of Speed, twister is the story of a group of storm
chasers who chase Tornados in a effort to get a device called
Dorothy up into the funnel to measure the effects of a Tornado.
Bill (Bill Paxton) is visiting his
estranged wife Jo (Helen Hunt) in order to finalize their divorce.
Jo is still in love with Bill and quite conveniently, Jo has brought
along Dorothy who is Bill's invention.
After sucking Bill in to spending a
day with her, the story really begins as the wonderful special
effects kick in.
Throw into the story an ex colleague
who has stolen Bills invention and is chasing storms for the money,
and a really bad love triangle you could be forgiven that you would
think this is quite a weak story. At times it is, but is redeemed by
sensational effects and pace that stops you thinking about the plot
at all.

VIDEO |
A reference quality
transfer adorns this disc and I wouldn't expect anything less
considering the type of movie this is. The picture and sound are so
good, it could easily be classed a demo disc to show off to the
friends when the come around.
This transfer is
razor sharp throughout and there is not any hint of softness.
Colors were perfect
throughout and really held up in a way that only DVD can. It
certainly shows the VHS version up, although that isn't hard.
There were no MPEG
or film artifacts visible at all.
Twister is framed at
2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.
This is a single-sided, dual layer disc.
The layer change occurs at 48:30.

AUDIO |
Demo quality Dolby
Digital 5.1 sound is encoded on this disc that really assaults
your senses and your speakers.
This disc is a
perfect example of 5.1 surround use with perfect integration of
the split surrounds throughout the movie. In fact they are so well
placed that you forget that they are there and that you are
actually inside a Tornado.
Even when there are
no storms around, the surrounds are still used very well to
immerse you into the current scene.
The .1 channel
rumbled my floor constantly.
Dialog was easy to
hear.

Even though this is a

Theatrical Trailer: An
excellent trailer framed at 1:85:1 with Dolby Digital 2.0 surround sound.
Pity it's not in 5.1.
