Lethal Weapon 4: AC3 Laserdisc
Warner Bros. / 1998 / 127 Mins / Rated R

MOVIE
I didn't go and see the latest Lethal Weapon movie at the theatre thinking that after a 5 year absence and this being the 4th movie, the franchise would have run out of steam, boy was I wrong. The film opens in the usual Lethal Weapon style, Loud and brash.

The opening titles and scenes just ooze demo quality, the opening  with the crazy flame throwing gun toting NRA spokesman making a mess of downtown L.A. Anyhow onto the story. After a nice evening fishing the boys are interrupted by a run away tanker, after the obligatory shootout we learn that this is actually an illegal immigrant slave ship.

We learn along the way that the resident bad guy of the movie (Jet Li) is trying to buy the freedom of his triad forefathers. On the home side of things we learn that Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) is pregnant with Rigg's child and the are other things going on in Roger's family as well.

The movie is filled with good action, great stunts one of the best bad guys I have seen in a movie for ages. The movie also has a great soundtrack by Michael Kamen & Eric Clapton. Fun Stuff.

VIDEO
WOW outstanding stuff here on this disc. The picture on this disc exhibits excellent color fidelity. The colors are rich and warm, flesh tones look natural and the blacks are as they should be a deep solid black. The images are very sharp in this movie and the contrast is as superb as the shadow detail. Demo Quality.

Lethal Weapon IV is framed at 2:35:1, being a laserdisc it is not 16:9 enhanced.

AUDIO
What an experience. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is a complete lesson in spatial effects. The .1 bass channel is extremely deep and pushed my system to the limit. The surrounds were used very effectively and the sound steering from channel to channel was superb. The front channels were also very loud. The only downside to all this was the fact that some dialog was hard to hear at times.
EXTRAS
There are a few extras on this disc, first the Dolby Digital trailer, also there is a 30 minute documentary called Pure Lethal featuring outtakes and never before seen scenes hosted by a hyped up Danny Glover & there is also a B-Roll that features some of the scenes taken by a cameraman filming the movie itself.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is a great looking laserdisc, well worth the money although the DVD version will be out soon.
