Deep Impact: AC3 Laserdisc
DreamWorks / 1997 / 121 Mins / Rated PG-13

MOVIE
This was the first of the two big asteroid movies of 1998 and IMHO it is the best, the story is far more human than Armageddon. The basic story begins when Leo Beiderman (Elijah Wood) finds an unknown object in the sky, interested he sends it off to an astronomer who quickly realizes that the comet named Wolf-Beiderman is going to collide with earth in 3 years, but before he has the chance to let the world know, he dies in a car accident.

A year passes with nothing on the matter happening, until Jenny Learner (Tea Leoni) is digging up dirt on and affair the President had with someone name E.L.E. By the time she's figured this, she is bundled up by the C.I.A and meets the President, he asks her to hold off on the story, even though she doesn't really know what's going on, but she agrees and finally doe's figure out what the story is about.

A comet the size of New York is going to collide with Earth, but there is a plan. A ship named Messiah with several crew, headed by Robert Duvall will go to the comet and destroy it with nukes and save the day. Will they succeed? Well lets just say, yes and no and it makes for some spectacular special effects. Highly Enjoyable.

VIDEO

Outstanding. The video on this disc is razor sharp at all times with very little noise apparent in the picture at all. Colors are very vibrant, dark scenes are well rendered and is great quality, especially for laserdisc. The print is also THX certified. Side 3 of the disc is the most visually spectacular and is presented in CAV format, which is great for pausing some scenes when the asteroid hits. Great Stuff.

Deep Impact is framed at 2:35:1 and is not 16:9 enhanced.

This is 3 sided laserdisc.

AUDIO
Wow what a blast, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and it's a huge workout on your system. Your surrounds are always highly active and aggressive, whether it's ambient sound or music and sound effects it will test your system. The .1 channel will also have to be up to the beating that this movie will give it.
EXTRAS
Yada, Yada not much at all, just the THX LaserDisc trailer. Ho-Hum.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This is the best Laserdisc I have seen so far of the recent movie releases this past year. It's loud, funny, colorful and is a worthy addition to your collection.
