U.S. Marshals
Warner Bros. / 1998 / 126 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
Tommy Lee Jones is back in his Academy Award winning role, Sam Gerard. And this time he's got a new fugitive to catch, Wesley Snipes. Snipes plays a tow truck driver who we learn is wanted for a brutal double murder in New York City of 2 men in the U.N. building. He is assigned to be flown back from Chicago to New York with a bunch of other prisoners. This is where the movie really begins, one of the prisoners is actually an assassin who has been assigned to kill Snipes and in the process blows a whole in the window and causes the plane to rip open and begin falling out of the sky. The plane crash sequence in this movie tries to better the train crash sequence of the original movie and while it is good I still think the train crash sequence is better. Anyhow, with the plane crashed it gives Wesley the chance to escape, cue mandatory Man-Hunt, yay. This movie is filled with some great action scenes and a few good plot twists, it's an enjoyable movie and only I would only rate it a little below the original and not a waste of a sequel like most movies.
VIDEO

This is a very good quality disc for video, granted there are a few artifacts in the print but nothing too bad. The shadow detail was superb and very well rendered. The color & flesh tomes seemed a little muted which is a bit of a pity but you get used to it after a little while of watching.

U.S. Marshals is framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a FLIPPER disc and thankfully there is no need to get up and turn the disc over halfway through the movie. The extra's and the movie are separated on each side of the disc.

AUDIO

What a letdown in this department, the English soundtrack is only encoded in Dolby Digital 2.0, what a letdown. If they can release a discrete 5.1 version overseas why not here? Anyhow with that gripe aside the sound even though flat still is quite good. The soundtrack is very immersive and does indeed surround you, the mix does have an aggressive surround track and good use of the front speakers as well. Sounds that are off the the left and right of screen really do have a presence and add to the whole effect.

The dialog was very clear and easy to listen to, even with a lot of ambient sound in the background, you could always understand what was being said.

EXTRAS
There are really not many extra's on this disc, I can't see how they could call this a special edition. There is no theatrical trailer on this disc, the main extra is a section called "Anatomy of a plane crash" it's a segmented extra about how they made the plane crash sequence. The main extra is on Side B of the disc, and although it's good in the fact that it doesn't interrupt the movie, when you spin up the second side to view the main extra you have to sit through 2 minutes of annoying copyright warnings in every bloody language imaginable.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Not the best disc Warner Bros. have released to date, the video quality is good so is the actual movie but the lack of Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and the extras that the Region 1 version has means it shouldn't be called a special edition. If your a fan of the original movie grab it, if not just give it a rental.
