The Truman Show
Paramount / 1998 / 103 Mins / Rated PG

MOVIE
So here it is, the movie that everyone was talking about last year, The Truman Show. Jim Carrey stars as Truman Burbank a man living in the small town of Seahaven, blissfully unaware that his whole life has been staged for the world to watch on television. Through his life he has been given clues that something is different about his existence and the place he lives in, but he just goes on dismissing these as Co-incidence. One day a light falls from the sky, this one thing begins a series of events that finally get Truman really thinking about his life, and by the time he realizes that the world isn't as it seems. It is a race against time for Truman to make it to the outside world. Great Stuff.
VIDEO

Not overly bad in the quality department, it actually looks a little like a stock standard Region 4 Warner release. There are a few artifacts in the print in the first 30 mins of the movie and there are also some scenes where the colors seem over saturated, but on the whole the image transfer is acceptable, it's just a pity it's not 16:9 enhanced.

The Truman Show  is framed at 1:66:1 and is not 16:9 enhanced, also one other annoying thing I found is that the picture is not framed properly at the center either, but this is a little gripe.

AUDIO

There are several sound formats on this disc. English Dolby Digital 5.1/2.0 & French Dolby Digital 2.0. I listened to the English DD5.1 soundtrack. On the whole the soundtrack is lacking with very little subwoofer use except when there are some storm scenes near the end. Mostly the sound stage is located towards the front and the surrounds are used for the music score.

The dialog is easy to listen to and is very well mixed.

EXTRAS
A couple of good extras, you get 2 trailers, a teaser & theatrical trailer. The teaser is a 4:3 or full frame trailer with DD2.0 sound and the theatrical trailer is framed at 1:66:1 with DD2.0 sound. The picture quality of the trailers is touch & go. The theatrical trailer looks better and sounds better than the teaser, turn it up and it sounds good. There is also an animated menu which is one of the best I have seen yet, an animated airship flies by when accessing menus, plus you get some great fireworks as well.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Highly enjoyable, and well worth the price of admission.
