The World Is Not Enough: Special Edition.
MGM / 1999 / 128 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
The World Is Not Enough is 19th installment or a franchise that has been running for 38 years.

The plot of this one goes something like this. After James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) recovers a wad of stolen money it is returned to it's rightful owner who is subsequently blown up by a craftily designed bomb planted in the money.

Believing that the bombing is the work of Reynard (Robert Carlyle) Bond races to protect Elektra King (Sophie Marcaeu) little realizing that Elektra and Reynard are in cahoots together.

Now Bond must join forces with Christmas Jones (Denise Richards) to save M from Elektra's evil clutches and averting a nuclear meltdown in a submarine in Turkey.

While not the best Bond Adventure, The World Is Not Enough is loaded with fun action sequences and one liners and is a welcome adventure to the series.

It's great to see that MGM will be releasing all of the Bond movies over the next year. What a good time we are to have here in Region 4.

VIDEO
The World Is Not Enough has a reference quality super sharp transfer.

Shadow detail is wonderful as are the colors which are well rendered. There are no MPEG artifacts present and the same can be said for film artifacts.

The World Is Not Enough is framed at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a single-sided, dual layer disc. The layer change occurs at 32:28.

AUDIO

Containing an absolutely sensational Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, or is that 6.1??? The World Is Not Enough far exceeds reference quality. I would even go so far as saying that this is one of the best Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes I have heard of a Region 4 disc.

Right from the get go you know your in for an aural treat with a perfectly rendered soundstage which puts you right in the middle of the action. The surrounds are constantly used but never really call attention to themselves. The same can be said for the .1 channel which perfectly underscores the wonderful music by David Arnold and effects of the soundtrack.

The only thing I could not be sure of is if this disc includes Dolby Digital EX 6.1 audio on the disc as I do not have EX equipment, yet... But it is more than likely that is does.

The dialog was easy to hear throughout.

EXTRAS

Sporting a special edition title, it's easy to see why. Just look at these features.

Audio Commentary - Director: This track features Michael Apted in a very detailed but somewhat boring commentary track. I have heard better.

Audio Commentary - Composer, Production Designer, Second Unit Director: This commentary is much more enjoyable though not as technical, but is more enjoyable than the first. It features common Bond commentary stalwarts Vic Armstrong & Vic Armstrong and to a lesser extent David Arnold.

Theatrical Trailer: A great trailer in 2:35:1 video that is 16:9 enhanced. It also features Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. Please all distributors, put 5.1 sound on your trailers.

Featurette - Making Of The World Is Not Enough: Hosted by one of those Entertainment Tonight types, this is a very shallow featurette that has no real extra information. Runs about 20 minutes.

Featurette - The Bond Cocktail: A better more enjoyable featurette about the Bond franchise and what makes it so popular. Runs about 30 minutes.

Featurette - Bond Down River: An average fluff piece on how they created that excellent chase sequence.

Featurette - Tribute To Desmond Llewelyn: A lovely little dedication to the late actor to the tune of "Nobody does it better"

Music Video - The World Is Not Enough, Garbage: I have never liked this band, there music and name are one in the same to me so I did not like the track at all.

The disc also includes:

The World Is Not Enough Playstation Trailer.
Storyboard Comparison.

Subtitles: Closed Captioned.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Reference quality disc and fun to watch movie. Good combination. Heartily recommended.
