MOVIE |
Michael Bay is one of the most visual
directors working in Hollywood today, Armageddon, Bad Boys had a
wonderful visual style. The Rock is no exception. Ed Harris is
General Hummel, he's not too happy with the government so he steals
some chemical weapons and takes control of Alcatraz. The FBI enlist
John Mason, the only man to escape Alcatraz, he hitches a ride with
Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and some marines to stop the
General and take back the island. This is a movie brimming with
action, and is a delight to watch. Yes it might be a popcorn movie
but it's a very stylish one.

VIDEO |
The Rock has a very sharp transfer that is
16:9 enhanced, shadow detail was as good as can be expected considering
the movie type, Michael Bay's other movies generally tend to have the same
type of shadow detail. Still better than a lot of other movies. There were no MPEG artifacts were present
on this disc. There was some major film grain throughout. Colors were
vivid.
The Rock is framed at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.
This is an flipper disc, and is very
annoying, in fact is the worst disc I have seen, right in the middle of
the action about an hour in while the marines enter Alcatraz. Why Buena
Vista.

AUDIO |
Sensational a very immersive and engaging
Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. The sound steering is nothing short of
spectacular and you really feel enveloped. The dialog does get slightly
hard to hear at times with all the noise. The .1 channel pumped
throughout.

FINAL THOUGHTS |
A great
movie, with a good video transfer on a badly designed flipper disc.
Still better than the R1 version though. I hope they remaster this
