Speed
20th Century Fox / 1994 / 122 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
It seems that some of the best and sometimes worst Directors come from being Cinematographers.

With Jan De Bont I think I'm sitting on the fence here. He's a great Cinematographer see Die Hard, Hunt For Red October, Basic instinct, Lethal Weapon 3 or even this movie for instance. His Directing though leaves a lot to be desired. This movie as well as Twister are acceptable but then he made the travesty that is Speed 2 or more recently The Hunting.

Speed is the story of Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) he is a disgruntled cop who has already been thwarted when he tried to get 2 million bucks from the city with an elevator bombing. Now he puts a bomb on a bus that will explode if it drops below 50MPH. Jack Travern (Keanu Reeves) is a cop with way too much testosterone who is the man who is trying to stop the bus form exploding.

The movie is filled with some great scenes but and it's a big but YOU MUST! suspend you disbelief for 2 hours to really enjoy it.

VIDEO
Speed features a very good transfer that is very sharp. Shadow detail is great, there are no MPEG artifacts although there is a little shimmering in some scenes. Film artifacts are not present. Colors seemed a little over saturated.

Speed is framed at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This disc is a single sided, dual layer disc. The layer change occurs at 76:17. For some reason the layer change skipped a chapter on my player and bypassed the scene at Howard Payne's house. For a little while I thought the movie was a cut British version. Luckily it wasn't.

AUDIO
This is a Dolby Digital 5.1 track with a silent .1 channel, essentially a 5.0 mix but a very good one.

The surrounds are used effectively and a re well integrated into the mix with good sound steering which creates an engaging sound field. The dialog was always easy to hear.

EXTRAS
Standard Fox extras yet again.

Theatrical Trailer: Dolby Digital 2.0 mono, 1:33:1 video. A good trailer that is lacking technically.

Subtitles: Closed Captioned, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Icelandic, Spanish.

FINAL THOUGHTS
An enjoyable movie on an acceptable disc.
