Shine
Roadshow / 1996 / 130 Mins / Rated PG

MOVIE
David Helfgott, a child prodigy on the piano who is treated awfully by his father who won't let him grow up, has a complete breakdown while a teenager.

David is not able to express himself properly until his 40's when he meets the woman who changes his life. The young Helfgott is played by Noah Taylor and as he ages the role moves onto Geoffrey Rush, in his academy award winning role.

Also in the cast are Armin Mueller Stahl as David's father and Lyn Redgrave and Gillian, David's wife.

VIDEO
Yet another Roadshow DVD I am not exactly happy with, while the transfer is generally clean, although there is a little noise in the darkened scenes, the bloody thing is in pan & scan, and if there is anything that peeves me off more it that. Why couldn't Roadshow release it in it's original format? That's what I thought DVD was good for! Two versions, P&S and Widescreen. So you guys lose points big time. Now I know that Wild Rhapsody is also in P&S as well, but as that was a television program originally they wouldn't have filmed it in a widesceen format, that's why it gets off. But Shine and Priscilla have a lot to answer for!

Shine is framed in 4:3 Pan & Scan.

This is a single-sided, single layer disc.

AUDIO
Again another mislabeled disc, the only sound formats on the disc are Dolby Surround and MPEG 2, and while they sound more clear than it's VHS counterpart (though not much) it's is an acceptable sound-field.
EXTRAS
Scene selections, trailers and a Featurette, so not overly bad on the extra side, but is missing stuff like subtitles, other sound formats, production notes, etc.
FINAL THOUGHTS
If you like the movie, it's not a bad buy, but I would still go for the widesceen VHS version that is available, it includes all the same extras as well. Oh and the movie isn't chaptered as well as I like, only 13 chapters for a 130 minute movie, no thanks. I would expect around 30.
