Mission Impossible
Paramount / 1996 / 110 Mins / Rated PG-13

MOVIE
In yet another remake of a popular 60's TV series, we have the 90's version of Mission Impossible.

This time around the IMF team must recover a CIA list  that has the names of all the CIA operatives in Europe. Part way through the operation the team is one by one exterminated until only Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is left. Upon meeting with his superiors he realizes that the whole operation was a decoy to find a mole within the operation but as he is the only one left, everyone believes he is the mole.

Desperate, alone with no money, Ethan must resort to recruiting disavowed agents to clear his name and find out who is the true mole.

While the movie is true to the original series with some names, that is where the similarities end. This is a very good espionage thriller although it does lose it's way towards the end of the movie.

It is a fun romp though.

VIDEO
It's good to see Paramount giving the consumer a choice of video mode to watch this movie in but it also has some drawbacks, namely video quality. It looks as if putting 2 versions of the movie on one disc means they have to sacrifice video quality.

The transfer is soft at times and not 100% sharp, namely during the opening sequence in night time Prague. Shadow detail is also quite poor in darkened scenes with the blacks also looking somewhat blue at times. There was also some noticeable MPEG artifacts during those scenes. Once the movie gets passed these scenes the transfer settles down a lot. Color is well rendered at all times.

Mission Impossible is presented in 2 formats on this dual layer disc. One layer includes the 2:35:1 aspect ratio transfer which is not 16:9 enhanced. The other layer includes the 4:3 pan & scan transfer.

This is an RSDL disc. There is no layer change in the movie and it looks as if the layer separates the two movies.

AUDIO
Powerful is a word to describe for this sound track. It is encoded in several formats. English Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 and well as a French Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtracks. I listened to the 5.1 track and was very impressed. There is a lot of work going on in the surround speakers with excellent sound steering. The .1 channel was also used very effectively.
EXTRAS
This disc isn't loaded with a lot of extra's. Your only one is the theatrical trailer, it's good, but not enough to give it a high extras score.

Original Theatrical Trailer: One of the best trailers around. Encoded in Dolby Digital 2.0 sound in a 1:85:1 transfer, not 16:9 enhanced. This sells the movie so well you can see why it did so well at the box office.

The subtitles are on this disc:
Closed Captions
Spanish Subtitles

More extras please Paramount.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Entertaining movie, thrown thoughtlessly onto DVD. Woeful extras, above average transfer, no 16:9 enhancement.
