The Insider
Touchstone / 2000 / 151 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
It was not so long ago that I reviewed Michael Mann's other long opus, Heat. Now I can happily say that his movies are getting better and shorter. Yay!

The Insider is based on the a true story about a whistle blower from a U.S. tobacco firm who is interviewed on Sixty Minutes regarding the problems cigarettes are and how tobacco companies have been lying to people. ("Like that's not a surprise!, disgusting habit".)

Russell Crowe plays Jeffery Wigand the whistle blower. Al Pacino plays Lowell Bergman a sixty minutes producer who convinces Wigand to speak out. The film also stars Christopher Plummer, Gina Gershon, Phillip Baker Hall and even the atrocious Debi Mazar who is surprisingly good in this! I guess Mann is a good director then!

Insider is a solid movie with great writing and excellent cinematography. Highly recommended.

VIDEO

Buena Vista have again delivered the goods with a super sharp transfer which really adds to the movie's presentation.

Shadow detail was above average but not the best around due to some minor flaws.

Colors were beautifully rendered, a good example of this is the scene where Al Pacino is on the beach talking to Crowe. The blue is beautiful and certainly beats our sewage infested beeches.

There were no MPEG or film artifacts present.

The Insider is framed at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a single sided, dual layer disc. The layer change occurs at 75:57

AUDIO

While this is a good sound transfer, it does feel somewhat flat as it is a front heavy 3 channel mix even though this is a 5.1 track.

Dialog was always easy to hear and the music is well integrated into this mix and does not distort the dialog at all like some other movies.

Surround channels were not used but the .1 channel was used to enhance the soundtrack.

EXTRAS
Again an extra on this Buena Vista. It's not much but it's appreciated.

Production Featurette: Your standard fare, interviews with film footage. Above average. 1:33:1, Dolby Digital 2.0 sound.

Subtitles include:

Closed Captioned, Hebrew.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I highly recommend this disc, the movie is great and the disc isn't too shabby either.
