The Horse Whisperer
Touchstone / 1998 / 110 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
Looking for a really slow movie, well look no further. The Horse Whisperer is the story of MacLean family and the effects a tragedy has on there small family.

One winter day young Grace Maclean (Scarlett Johanssen) is out riding her horse with a friend when an accident with a truck kills her friend and badly injures her horse and almost kills young Grace.

Grace has he leg amputated but survives, her horse is seriously hurt but her mother Annie does not want the horse put down.

Annie arranges to go on a trip with her daughter and their horse to Montana to meet Tom Booker, a celebrated "Horse Whisperer" to see if he can help the small family.

All in all this is a very slow if slightly enjoyable movie. The acting is quite good and the cinematography is breathtaking.

VIDEO
The Horse Whisperer has a very impressive video transfer albeit with one problem, more on that later.

The transfer is very sharp throughout with excellent color vibrancy. Shadow detail was excellent.

There were no film or MPEG artifacts present on this disc.

The Horse Whisperer is framed at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

Now onto my problem. This movie was filmed in 2 aspect ratios. A 1:85:1 ratio for the city scenes and for the country scenes the aspect ratio changes to my preferred 2:35:1 ratio which looks sensational.

This DVD transfer has the entire movie in a 2:35:1 aspect ratio with no deviation between the two ratios at all. Now while a wide screen presentation is great, I still would have preferred the disc contain the 2 aspect ratios of Redford's original dual aspect ratio vision.

This is a dual-sided, single layer disc. You have to get off you ass and turn the disc over at around the 80 minute mark. Although it does make for a good pee break considering this movies length.

AUDIO

While is contains a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, it sounds like a front heavy stereo mix with only minimal surround use for ambience.

The upside is that the transfer was very clear with good definition and the dialog was easy to hear

The subwoofer was DOA for this movie.

FINAL THOUGHTS
An slow, wandering movie chucked onto a featureless DVD. Please Buena Vista, all your DVD's deserve better treatment!
