GoldFinger: Special Edition
MGM / 1999 / 128 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
Goldfinger is the seminal Bond film. It contains a perfect Bond story, perfect bad guy in Goldfinger  and the perfect Bond Girl in Pussy Galore, gotta love that name! Auric Goldfinger is a very, very rich man who wants to steal all the Gold in For Knox to make the American Dollar very unstable but there is one problem, Gold is very heavy and hard to move so his plans are slightly different but ingenious none the less.

Filled with wonderful gadgets and famous Bond moments like the gold painted woman, deadly laser and of course Odd Job, Goldfinger is a Bond movie you can enjoy again and again.

VIDEO
Even though a lot of restoration work has not been done to this Bond movie, it still looks good.

The transfer for this movie is quite sharp throughout with the odd occasion where the movie looked a little soft.

Shadow detail was excellent throughout and objects were well defined. Colors were not so good with deviations between over and under saturation, damn shame. MPEG artifacts were no existent, film artifacts were quite common during the feature.

Goldfinger is framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a single-sided, dual layer disc. The layer change occurs at 41:38.

AUDIO

Goldfinger sports a Dolby Digital 2.0 mono soundtrack that is based front and center.

There is no surround use during the movie at all.

Dialog is well mixed into the center channel with the sound effects compared to Dr. No where voices sometime becomes muffled ins action scenes.

The .1 channel was barely used.

EXTRAS

Yet another special edition release for this Bond series.

Audio Commentary - Director: This track features Guy Hamilton and is a recorded session as he dies a few years ago now so it isn't really scene specific. This commentary is quite informative and gives some info away regards the making of the movie.

Audio Commentary - Cast & Crew: This is a cut together commentary from interviews by various members of the cast & crew. Above average.

Theatrical Trailer: An average quality and quite boring trailer. Definitely shows the difference how trailer making has become an art form since the 60's. 1:85:1, Dolby Digital 2.0 mono.

TV Spots: 3 TV spots form the era. All 1:33:1 with Dolby Digital 2.0 mono sound.

Documentary - Making Of Goldfinger: A very good 20 or so minute documentary regards the making of the movie. It is a very informative an enjoyable program. 1:33:1, Dolby Digital 2.0 mono.

Documentary - Goldfinger Phenomenon: Another great 30 minute documentary again hosted/narrated by Patrick Macnee but this documentary more focuses on the popularity of the Bond Franchise and the Goldfinger movie itself, rather than the making of the movie. 1:33:1, Dolby Digital 2.0 mono.

Radio Spots: Now maybe I'm weird but this is a great inclusion. 20 minutes of radio spots from the era. Great for posterity's sake although they only need to be listened to once.

Radio Interview: This is your standard radio interview from the day with Connery. Good value, again only need to be listened to once.

The disc also includes:

Goldfinger Photo Gallery

Subtitles: Closed Captioned.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Great Bond action and a wonderfully presented DVD with tons of extras.
