Goldeneye
United Artists / 1995 / 125 Mins / Rated PG

MOVIE
After a 6 year absence from the screens the 17th installment of the James Bond movies returned with a bang and a new Bond which ultimately became the highest grossing Bond movie to date.

The new James Bond was of course Pierce Brosnan and a popular Bond he is at that. With the success of his 3rd outing as Bond in The World is Not Enough I thought I would look back at another one of the earlier DVD releases. Goldeneye.

The movie begins seven years earlier as we are slowly introduced to the new bond. James has to destroy a Russian base. Joined by his best friend and fellow 00 agent 006. 006 is murdered and 007 gets away. We fast forward 7 years and find that Bond now has a lady boss and is now battling different enemies. Gone a the usual Russian enemies, now we have private terrorists.

A secret Russian weapon system called Goldeneye has been stolen and is going to be used against the world for ransom, pay up or London gets it. Upon investigation Bond realizes that his old friend 006 alive and behind it all.

Now best friends have become worst enemies and the clock is counting down. Can Bond save the day yet again? The only downside I have with the movie is that we get the edited British version and not a full uncut version.

Filled with great action sequences, lush camerawork and snappy one-liners this movie make for one of the best Bond movies yet.

VIDEO
I believe this is the best transfer I have seen from MGM yet. Absolutely stunning is more than appropriate I believe. The transfer has no video fault visible. No MPEG artifacts or film artifacts. The colors are very rich throughout. and the framing was perfect. It's amazing that they could get this good a picture quality on a single layer and show you don't need a dual layer if you master a disc correctly.

Note: The cover states 1:85:1 transfer, this is not the case the movie is framed correctly at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced

This is a single sided, single layer disc.

AUDIO

Again a very good performance from the sound in this movie. There is a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack for the flick and a 2.0 soundtrack for the commentary.

The surround mix used in Goldeneye is aggressive, but not overly so. The surround steering is very well setup and is used only when needed. At other times the movie's dialog is based at the front.

EXTRAS
Not a bad set of extras on offer.

Audio Commentary: Director & Producer: This is a very interesting and informative commentary. The director gives a lot of detail on the making of the movie.

Original Theatrical Trailer: A good trailer framed at 2:35:1 with Dolby Digital 2.1 surround sound. This is a very good trailer which sells the movie very well. The only downside is that it is cut off at the end which would have only given the US release date. Why the cut it off even though it is mentioned on the trailer.

8 Page Booklet: This is just your standard MGM booklet with production notes and chapter listings.

Subtitles include: English Subtitles.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Get it, This is a great movie. Great sound, video & extras.
