Get Shorty
MGM/UA / 1995 / 105 Mins / Rated MA15+

MOVIE
Here is another one of Barry Sonnenfeld's great movies before he became yet another "Hollywood director" and made movies like Wild Wild West.

Get Shorty is the story of Chilli Palmer (John Travolta) in yet another cool role. Chilli is a loan shark who also has problems with another lowlife mobster Ray "Bones" Barboni (Dennis Farina) but while Chilli's boss in New York is alive Ray can't do a thing to Chilli.

Next day Chilli finds out that his boss is dead, now Ray runs the business and sends Chilli off to find a sucker that is late on a payment. Chilli finds out that the guy faked a his death in a plane accident and went out to Las Vegas.

While there he also gets another job to hunt down a low life director that owes money also, this is the beginning of Chilli's new career in the movie business and the pitfalls it entails.

Chilli finds that Hollywood is a place of thieves and lowlifes and that the movie business is more tough and dangerous than the mob business.

This is a very funny movie and takes more than a few stabs at the movie business, I enjoyed this movie a lot. Recommended.

VIDEO
This is a very good transfer, not reference quality mind you, but still very good. The transfer is very sharp with rich colors throughout. Shadow detail is excellent and there were no MPEG artifacts. There were a few problems with the original film, specks, marks and lines etc, these are few and far between though.

Get Shorty is framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a single-sided, dual layer disc. The layer change hits at 62:34

AUDIO

2 Audio formats live on this disc. A Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, French, German & Italian plus a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack in Spanish.

I listened to the English 5.1 track and for most of the movie the sound stage is centered at the front with very little surround use at all, as this is a dialog driven movie it is acceptable and achieves what it is meant to but I still would have preferred a more enveloping soundtrack. The .1 channel was barely used also.

EXTRAS

A very modest set of extras are on this disc.

Theatrical Trailer: 1:85:1, Dolby Digital 2.0. A nice mono trailer that is very laid back but sells the movie quite well.

Booklet: Just your standard booklet MGM booklet.

Subtitles in English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Polish.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Good movie on a good disc.
