Forever Young
Warner Bros. / 1992 / 97 Mins / Rated PG

MOVIE

The plot of Forever Young is a good one but not one we haven't seen before in one way or another. Daniel McCormick (Mel Gibson) is a test pilot in the 30s with no fears, and life for him is great, he has a great friend Harry (George Wendt) and is devoted to the love of his life, Helen (Isabel Glasser). Daniel only has one problem, he doesn't have the courage to ask Helen to marry her, thinking he will ask her tomorrow.

But there is one little snag to that Helen is hit by a car and falls into a coma, months pass with no change in her condition so Daniel asks Harry who is researching cryogenics to freeze him for 1 year hoping by the time he wakes up, Helen will have awakened by that time. 50 years pass and the place where Daniel lived has changed, 2 young boys, one the brother of an Army recruit are playing in an Army warehouse when they come across a funny shaped case.

They play with it and when it opens we find Daniel in there still young and in a cryogenic freeze. Daniel awakens, the world is different and he is scared. After going to the military and telling them of his story and there disbelief of it, Daniel manages to find one of the boys who opened the chamber and asks for his assistance.

With the help of the boy, Daniel manages to find out what had happened to him and his friends years ago and he also has the chance to right his past problems. Fun stuff.

VIDEO
Forever Young is a fine transfer for a 7 year old movie. There were no visible artifacts in the print and the shadow detail was very well rendered. Color & flesh tones seemed a little lacking, but this is only a minor problem. There is also a 4:3 full frame version on the other side of this

Side A contains the Widescreen 1:78:1, 16:9 version.
Side B contains the 4:3 full frame version.

The disc is a double-sided, single layered disc with the widescreen version on side A and the Full Frame 4:3 version on side B.

AUDIO

Yet again another letdown by Warner Bros. This one is only encoded in Dolby Digital 2.0, I listened to the English soundtrack. Granted the movie wasn't released in Dolby Digital 5.1 a 5.1 master would have been appreciated.

The surrounds are used occasionally in this movie to add to the effect of some more exciting scenes and for the music, the movie was mainly staged toward the front though. There are also a French and Italian languages on the disc as well.

The Dialog was clear and easy to listen to and was quite a surprise, even during scenes with a lot of ambience.

EXTRAS
The extras on this disc are limited. Production Notes and Cast Notes along with Scene Access. That is your lot on this one, disappointing.

Subtitles include: English, French, Italian, Dutch, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Closed Captions.

FINAL THOUGHTS
A good light hearted movie for your collection, but it isn't really worth the price considering the lack of extras. It's worth a rental though.
