Dick Tracy
Touchstone Pictures / 1990 / 101 Mins / Rated PG

MOVIE
Based on the famous comics, Dick Tracy is yet another of Hollywood's attempts to bring a comic book character to the big screen. Granted there have been old Saturday matinee movies about him, but nothing this flashy.

Directed and starring Warren Beatty this was very heavily hyped at the time of it's release but was savaged upon release even though it did break the 100 million mark in ticket sales.

Basically your bad guy in this movie is Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino). He is wanting to take over the town but only one thing is in his way, Dick Tracy. For most of the movie it goes to a fro between each of the protagonists, Tracy trying to catch Big Boy at his own game and Big Boy trying to get rid of his arch enemy.

The story doesn't deviate much from that mould and the subplots really are not worth mentioning.

It's interesting to note that this movie was only filmed in main primary colors only and nothing else.

Look for great, if small performances from James Caan, Charles Durning, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Sorvino, Dick Van Dyke, Kathy Bates & Dustin Hoffman and the absolutely wonderful songs from Stephen Sondheim.

VIDEO
Quite a good transfer from Buena Vista. Dick Tracy is very sharp with acceptable shadow detail. The colors were very well rendered and I was impressed even more as the movie was only filmed with primary colors, but were pulled off wonderfully for this DVD release.

No MPEG artifacts were present at all. The original print had some marks throughout.

Dick Tracy is framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a Single Sided, Single Layer disc.

AUDIO

A good sound mix in this movie especially for the great musical numbers more than anything else. Dick Tracy was not release commercially with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound but it was with a CDS soundtrack and this may be a conversion of that.

Rear channels were not overly separated but they at least didn't sound muddy which helped create an overall impressive sound field. The .1 channel was used in action scenes

There are several sound formats on this disc. An English & French Dolby Digital 5.1 and an Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack.

The dialog is always easy to listen to.

EXTRAS
Being a Buena Vista Release there are sadly no extras.

Subtitles include English, Closed Captions.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I enjoyed Dick Tracy. It's a fun movie with a lush musical soundtrack and generally good transfer. Shame about the extras.
