Based on
the famous comics, Dick Tracy is yet another of Hollywood's
attempts to bring a comic book character to the big screen.
Granted there have been old Saturday matinee movies about him, but
nothing this flashy.
Directed and starring Warren Beatty
this was very heavily hyped at the time of it's release but was
savaged upon release even though it did break the 100 million mark
in ticket sales.
Basically your bad guy in this movie
is Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino). He is wanting to take over the
town but only one thing is in his way, Dick Tracy. For most of the
movie it goes to a fro between each of the protagonists, Tracy
trying to catch Big Boy at his own game and Big Boy trying to get
rid of his arch enemy.
The story doesn't deviate much from
that mould and the subplots really are not worth mentioning.
It's interesting to note that this
movie was only filmed in main primary colors only and nothing
else.
Look for great, if small
performances from James Caan, Charles Durning, Mandy Patinkin,
Paul Sorvino, Dick Van Dyke, Kathy Bates & Dustin Hoffman and
the absolutely wonderful songs from Stephen Sondheim.
