MOVIE
It's good to see some of the great older movies getting a chance on DVD. The Caine Mutiny is still one of my favorite Humphrey Bogart movies. Bogart plays Lt. Commander Queeg the newly assigned commanding officer of the U.S. minesweeper "Caine" At first things seem to go along normally, Queeg just seems like a very strict officer, but as we learn the new commander is just a little mentally unstable. During a typhoon during an operation the second officer (Van Johnson) and fellow officers take control of the vessel as they believe the captain's actions will get them killed. The captain charges the second officer with mutiny and the trial promptly begins. Look for a great performance from Jose Ferrer as the defending attorney and for Bogart's great performance on the stand.
VIDEO

For a movie that was made in 1952 the transfer is generally quite good. Granted there is some grain in the film but this is a fault of the original source material not the transfer. There were no MPEG artifacts seen.

The Caine Mutiny is framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is an RSDL disc with the layer switch occurring at 69.30

This is a single-sided, Dual  layer disc.

AUDIO

Because of the age of this movie there is only a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. The case states a 1.0 soundtrack. The 2.0 mix still is very flat and there is no surround or .1 channel use, but it does sound better than my old VHS version.

The dialog was clear throughout

EXTRAS
Not many extras here, just the theatrical trailer in Dolby Digital 2.0 sound in a full screen transfer. You also get some bios of the main stars and the director. There are also some photos included as well but these are of limited value.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The movie is great but the transfer isn't as good as some movies. If your a fan of older movies and are looking for a movie with more story than action this is it.
