The Bone Collector
Columbia / 1999 / 114 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
The Bone Collector is yet another one of those who done it thrillers, In this case who is the twisted killer who is running around killing innocent people in the same circumstances as on old book written 100 years ago.

Denzel Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme a forensic homicide detective who is paralyzed after an accident several years before.

To investigate the case he enlists the help of a rookie cop, played by Angelina Jolie as his eyes and ears of a crime scene.

The Bone Collector has one major failing. There are absolutely no clues given through the movie about who the killer is which does spoil some of the fun in guessing who the murderer is.

VIDEO
Reference quality audio quality is on offer here as is standard with a lot of Columbia/Tri-Star releases. The picture quality is very sharp and looks beautiful. Colors are well saturated and look wonderful. Shadow detail is superb also. There were no MPEG artifacts or film artifacts present.

The Bone Collector is framed at 2:35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.

This is a single-sided, dual layer disc. The layer change occurs at 72:57.

AUDIO

A reference quality soundtrack adorns this disc also. Originally released in Dolby Digital Surround EX this mix probably contains the EX components as well.

This 5.1 mix is very impressive and well rendered, you really feel like your part of the action. The surrounds were effectively used to created a wonderfully surround prescience that was not overbearing and pleasant to listen to. The .1 channel was well integrated into the mix and perfectly underscored the soundtrack when needed

Dialog was easy to hear.

EXTRAS

A good selection of extras on offer here.

Audio Commentary. Director: This commentary on offer is an average track at the best of times. Phillip Noyce gets technical about several issues but it never really rises above the average.

Isolated Music Score: This is the full soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. I was not very impressed by this score, but it is good that it is there.

Theatrical Trailers: There are 2 trailers on this disc. 1 for The Bone Collector and 1 for Devil in A Blue Dress. Both are in 4:3 format with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound.

Behind The Scenes: A rather boring look at how the movie was made. Runs about 20mins.

Subtitles: English, Greek, German, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Icelandic, Hindi, Hebrew, Dutch, Croatian, Turkish, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Arabic.

FINAL THOUGHTS
A slightly above average movie on a technically great disc.
