MOVIE |
As is usually the case, sequels are
not as good as the the first movie and in Batman Returns case this
is true. It is a consolation that this sequel is far superior than
the next 2 sequels directed by Joel Schmacher.
Batman Returns continues the story
of Bruce Wayne/Batman (Michael Keaton). This time he must now stop
Penguin (Danny DeVito) from becoming Mayor of Gotham City and from
killing the first born children of the privileged socialites of
Gotham. When Penguin joins forces with Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer),
Batman's life becomes even more complicated as he is falling in love
with Catwoman.
Batman Returns is a worthy sequel,
very dark much like the original and is well directed by Tim Burton
yet again. It's just missing something that the original had, not
sure what.

VIDEO |
The video transfer on
Batman Returns is quite disappointing. The transfer is very soft and
not as sharp as it should be, Shadow detail is also sadly lacking.
There were no MPEG
artifacts seen but there were quite a few numerous film artifacts
throughout, couldn't they have cleaned this up a bit?
This is really
quite disappointing.
Batman Returns is framed at
1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.
This is a single-sided, single
layer disc.

AUDIO |
While the video is
somewhat lacking the sound isn't. Batman Returns was the first
movie to be released theatrically with Dolby Digital sound and it
shows with an almost reference quality soundtrack.
This disc has a very
immersive soundtrack with wonderful surround integration and
separation. The .1 channel was used frequently to underscore sound
effects and music.
Dialog was always
easy to hear.
