MOVIE |
The theatrical trailer says to plug this movie "Why is it the people we
can't live with, are the people we can't live without." How true, the first time you
see this movie, what with Jack's hatred of pretty much everyone and thing, Helen Hunt's
general dislike of Jack, even though she thinks he somewhat cute.
The only one that seems
to love anyone one is the dog, but he does steal the show, but it is a good race between
him and some of the lines Jack shouts out along the way. Now I won't beat around the bush
some of it is rather racist. The story revolves around Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) a
obsessive-compulsive romance novelist, who hates germs, little animals, kids, blacks and
pretty much anything else in the world.
The only steady constant for him is Carol (Helen
Hunt) a waitress at his local restaurant who he is in love with. After his gay
neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear) is badly beaten by a couple of low-life scumbag robbers, Simon's dog
is dumped into Melvin's care, now after seeing how Melvin treated the dog in the opening
credits, you think it's curtains for the dog. Well you would be forgiven, the dog
actually changes his life forever and helps him mellow down and he slowly becomes more
accepting to people, and closer to Carol along the way. |
VIDEO |
This transfer is faultless, I couldn't find a thing wrong with it. It even
surpasses Columbia/Tri-Star's own high standards for video. What else is there to say.
As Good As It Gets is
framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.
This is a dual sided,
dual layer disc with the layer change occurring at the 66 minute
mark.

AUDIO |
There are a couple of sound formats on this disc, English Dolby Digital 5.1,
French Dolby Digital 5.1 & English Dolby Digital 2.0 Commentary track. The soundtrack
itself was clear and easy to listen to, the soundstage itself was more centralized to the
front and the surrounds were used lightly. The .1 channel went on strike for this one.
The dialog was very clear and easy to listen to and not
at all hard to make out, the same can also be said for the dialog in the commentary track.
|
EXTRAS |
This disc has a set of extra's that should really be mandatory on all DVD's now.
The original theatrical trailer in DD2.0 framed at 1:78:1, a feature length commentary
that features all the main stars and filmmakers, the commentary itself is funny to listen
to and they do give a good lot of information to the viewer. It's the kind of commentary
that sounds like one of the stars have just popped in the door for a minute and they will
have a quick chat & leave type of thing. Also on the disc are the cast
notes on the
makers and stars of the movie.
Subtitles include: English, French,
Dutch, Arabic. |
FINAL THOUGHTS |
