Aliens: Special Edition
20th Century Fox / 1986 / 148 Mins / Rated M15+

MOVIE
There are not many movies that top there originals and truthfully the theatrical edition of Aliens didn't, but a few years after it's release James Cameron added scenes to the original which in my case expanded to to the point of enjoyment more than the original.

It's 57 years after the original movie, Ripley has been drifting all that time in a suspended state. She is found by a passing ship and sent back to Earth where she tells them the story of what happened but no one believes her as the planet they found the alien on has been inhabited for years without a problem.

Time passes and soon Earth looses all contact with LV426 so a colonial marine crew is sent in with Ripley to find out what the problem is and eradicate it.

This is a full on assault of your senses with numerous aliens present in this sequel including the biggest scariest alien you will see yet. Wonderful.

VIDEO
Again yet another superb transfer on offer here that I would class as reference quality considering the age of the movie. There were no MPEG artifacts present and the was no film grain inherent in the print either. Colors were rich but not overdone and shadow detail was spot on.

Aliens is framed at 1:85:1 and is 16:9 enhanced. Personally I would have preferred Aliens to be in the 2:35:1 scope ratio rather than the 1:85:1 ratio but it's a small thing for me.

This is a single-sided, dual layer disc, the layer change occurs at 61:34 and is only slightly annoying.

AUDIO
Remastered in Dolby 5.1 sound this soundtrack is immersive. There is not a lot of directional use of the surrounds, but when they are needed they are utilized well.

The dialog did sometimes get hard to hear in some scenes, but not many, mainly those with a lot of ambient noise and SFX.

EXTRAS
A good selection of extras on offer.

Theatrical Trailer: 1:33:1 ration, 16:9 enhanced, quite good but only in mono.

Interview: This interview was conducted with Cameron near Aliens release and is quite boring.

Photo Gallery: A great amount of production photos are on offer here and look great.

Behind The Scenes: Includes 8 sections you can watch on the making of Aliens. Some do not have sound.

THX Trailer: Like it says.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Outstanding movie on an outstanding disc. Cameron at his best.
